
Every Bruce & Walker blank is rolled from the same class of carbon fibre used in aircraft structures and high-performance aerospace engineering — not a generic "carbon composite" sourced off the shelf. It's aerospace materials science, applied by hand, by people who've been building rods for 70 years.
A high-modulus carbon fibre from Mitsubishi Chemical, developed for demanding aerospace applications. High modulus means high stiffness for the weight — in a rod, that translates to a blank that recovers faster after the cast and transmits more feel, without adding bulk.
A standard-modulus, high-strength carbon fibre from Toray, one of the most trusted names in aerospace and motorsport composites. Where HR40 gives stiffness, T700 gives toughness — resistance to impact and fatigue, which matters over decades of hard fishing.
We choose the fibre — or blend of fibres — for each rod's layup based on the action we're building for, balancing the stiffness of one against the resilience of the other.
Our carbon arrives as prepreg — fibre pre-impregnated with a precisely controlled amount of resin, rather than resin brushed on by hand during rolling. That means every layer of every blank carries exactly the resin content it was engineered for — no more, no less.
The result is a lighter, more consistent blank: less excess resin weighing the rod down, tighter and more predictable wall thickness, and a rod-to-rod consistency that's very difficult to achieve with wet lay-up.
And it's made right here in the UK — the whole supply chain, from fibre to finished rod, stays close to home.
Aerospace materials, traditional method. Each section of every rod is hand-rolled onto its own tapered steel mandrel, wrapped several times around to build the wall, then cured under controlled heat and pressure.
It's slower than automated production — and it's why we can build to your exact length, weight and action, section by section, the same way Bruce & Walker rods have always been made in Hawick.
Higher fibre performance per gram means less material is needed to hit the same strength and stiffness targets — a lighter rod for a full day on the water.
High-modulus fibre stiffens the blank without adding weight, so the tip settles faster after the cast — more distance, less wobble.
The same toughness that makes these fibres suitable for aerospace use gives our blanks the fatigue resistance to handle a lifetime of fish — and often longer.
